Wills

Why prepare a will?

Approximately two thirds of Canadians will die without a will, are you one of them?

By preparing a will you have the opportunity to control how your assets will be distributed after you pass away. If you do not have a valid will, provincial legislation will dictate how your property will be distributed.

When you prepare a will, you have an opportunity to appoint a representative, also referred to as the executor or executrix, or trustee of your estate, who will be responsible for carrying out your wishes as stated in your will. The appointment of a representative is one of the most important decisions that a person can make when drafting a will. There are many factors to consider when selecting your representative and it is recommended that you seek professional advise when do so.

Wills can vary in their complexity and size ranging from a single page to many pages in length depending on the complexity of the estate. Since a will is a legal document it is prudent to consider a lawyer when drafting a will.
